Withdrawn / Thompson on National Security

Fred ThompsonWords: Thompson believes that Afghanistan and Iraq are “the central fronts” in the “war on terror” and that we need “a larger, more capable, and more modern military that can defeat terrorists, deter adversaries, and defend the US and our interests”. He supports a missile defense system and an enhanced intelligence community.

Actions: Thompson has not served in the US military; during the Vietnam conflict, he received a deferment as a parent. He voted FOR amending the ABM Treaty to allow the deployment of the missile defense system (1996), AGAINST banning chemical weapons (1997), AGAINST prohibiting same-sex basic training (1998), FOR a military pay raise (1999), FOR deploying National Missile Defense (1999), FOR cutting nuclear weapons to below START levels (1999), FOR another round of military base closures (1999), and AGAINST adopting the Comprehensive Test ban Treaty (1999).
