Romney on Health Care

Mitt RomneyWords: Romney believes that the uninsured can be covered through a free-market based system. He also supports subsidies for health coverage for low-income individuals and voluntary purchasing pools. “We have to stand up and say the market works. Personal responsibility works.”

Actions: As governor, Romney pushed an insurance reform bill through the legislature that includes mandates for individuals and employers, minimum coverage requirements, subsidized insurance, and government-enforced fines for noncompliance. He vetoed an amendment to penalizing companies that do not provide health care (which was overridden).
