Romney on Gun Control
Words: Romney supports a narrow ban on semi-automatic weapons. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.” He believes the individual right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
Actions: During his 1994 Senate campaign, Romney endorsed the Brady Bill (imposing a five-day waiting period on gun sales). As governor, Romney signed a 2004 measure instituting a permanent ban on semi-automatic weapons in Massachusetts. He also extended the term of firearm licenses from four to six years and signed a law providing free replacement licenses. Romney joined the NRA in 2006 (though he is not a gun-owner).
