Romney on Education
Words: Romney believes that under-performing schools should be reformed or replaced with charter schools. He advocates English immersion in schools and supports abstinence education. He once supported eliminating the Department of Education, but now supports “No Child Left Behind”. He also feels that schools can teach “family values” without promoting religion. “If we are going to compete in the global economy, we have to set our education goals higher.”
Actions: As governor, Romney supported means-tested vouchers for public and private schools in Massachusetts.
UPDATE: Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney met with The Des Moines Register’s editorial board Wednesday, April 4. Romney offered his views on education and talked about some of the things he did in the area of education as a governor.
