Withdrawn / Richardson on Education
Words: Richardson advocates a universal pre-kindergarten program, a minimum wage for teachers, and a ban on junk food in schools. He opposes voucher programs, believes “No Child Left Behind” should be ended and feels we should assist failing schools rather than penalizing them. He also supports paying off college loans through national service. “Improving our schools, improving education, access to education to all Americans, should be America’s foremost priority.”
Actions: As a US Representative, Richardson voted AGAINST giving federal aid only to schools allowing voluntary prayer (1994). As governor, he eliminated junk food in New Mexico schools and gave teachers a dramatic salary increase.
