McCain on Oversight & Reform
Words: McCain has been a leading proponent of campaign finance reform and advocates restricting PACs, lobbyists, and special interest groups and banning corporate and union contributions to end the “influence-peddling scheme”. McCain once supported term limits for Congress, but has since argued that campaign and election reform will effectively end “the incumbency protection racket” while avoiding “throwing out the good people with the bad”.
Actions: McCain voted AGAINST banning more types of Congressional gifts (1995), FOR approving a presidential line-item veto (1996), FOR banning campaign donations from unions and corporations (2001), FOR requiring a photo ID for voter registration (2002), FOR banning “soft money” contributions and restrict issue ads targeting specific candidates (2002), FOR the Senate Office of Public Integrity (2006), FOR allowing some lobbyist gifts to Congress (2006) - and, obviously, FOR the McCain-Feingold overhaul of campaign finance (1997). Citizens Against Government Waste has given McCain a rating of 91%.
