McCain on Foreign Policy
Words: McCain advocates overthrowing “rogue governments” and “assertive multilateralism”. He believes in engaging with China, urging political reform, but no diplomatic or trade relations with Cuba. He feels it is naïve to exclude nuclear weapons as a tool of diplomacy and believes in conscionable intervention. He also advocates sanctions against Russia in relation to Chechnya.
Actions: McCain voted FOR limiting the president’s power to impose economic sanctions (1998), FOR capping foreign aid at $12.7 billion (1999), and AGAINST tabling an amendment that would impose sanctions if China sells WMD (2000).
UPDATE: This off-hand attempt at humor “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran” will no doubt feature prominently in Democratic ads should McCain win his party’s nomination.
