Words: Biden generally supports preservation, conservation, and regulation. He feels that the oil industry should be investigated and their subsidies should be eliminated and that there should be a mandate for better gas mileage for automobiles. He has also advocated the abolition of commercial whaling.
Actions: Biden has introduced legislation to remove subsidies from oil companies and has lobbied for stricter mercury and smokestack emission regulation. He voted FOR requiring EPA risk assessments (1994), FOR desert protection in California (1994), FOR cutting funds for road-building near National Forests (1997), FOR transportation demo projects, AGAINST increased funding for forest service roads and habitat management (1999), AGAINST confirming Gale Norton as Secretary of the Interior (2001), and FOR including gas and oil smokestacks in mercury regulation (2005).
