Withdrawn / Huckabee on the “War on Terror” & Iraq
Words: Huckabee feels that we should “finish the job” in Iraq - and make sure it’s done right. He advocates more regional diplomacy and cooperation, especially from the Saudis. “We’ve got to insist that the people in that neighborhood take a far greater role militarily and financially in solving the problem. It’s their neighborhood.” He supports the Bush administration’s surge and advocates continued engagement in Iraq.
Actions: Huckabee adopted the National Governors Association’s position that state and local governments should be included in anti-terrorism planning.
Update: Although Gov. Huckabee came under fire from his rivals (primarily Gov Romney) for saying the Bush administration suffered from a bunker mentality, his foreign policy is not easily distinguished from the President’s.
For many observers, Huckabee’s grasp of foreign affairs seems dangerously amateurish – he missed the NIE on Iran entirely and his only response to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was to promote the wall along the Mexican border as a means of preventing illegal Pakistanis from entering the country.
