Withdrawn / Huckabee on Immigration
Words: Huckabee opposes amnesty for immigrants and supports the construction of a border fence. He says that law-abiding and tax-paying illegal immigrants should be allowed to choose between deportation and a rigorous citizenship process, including a fine. “We need more well-trained border agents and cooperation agreements with local and state law enforcement officials.” He advocates allowing all professionals in as legal aliens and criticizes many anti-immigration arguments as “mean-spirited” and racist.
Actions: No record.
Updates: Huckabee’s only response to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was to promote the wall along the Mexican border as a means of preventing illegal Pakistanis from entering the country.
Gov. Huckabee also included abortion as an issue in a recent discussion of immigration policy: “Sometimes we talk about why we are importing so many people in our work force. It might be because for the last 35 years we have aborted more than 1 million people who would have been in our workforce had we not had the holocaust of liberalized abortion under a flawed of Supreme Court ruling in 1973.” (Excerpts from speech to Family Research Council Values Voters Summit, 10.20.2007)
