Words: Huckabee supports “covenant” marriages to combat divorce, advocates strong participation by the father in child-rearing, and feels children should be taught strict moral standards. “The purpose of marriage is to establish a relationship in which we learn to love another person in the sacrificial and unselfish manner that God loves us.”

Actions: Huckabee is married with three children - and reportedly used his political influence to keep one of them from being prosecuted in an animal abuse case. He led the effort to have Arkansas adopt “covenant” marriages and espouses the National Governors Association policy on fatherhood.

Update: Just before the Michigan Primary, Gov. Huckabee gave a speech in which he said that the constitution should be amended to reflect God’s “standards”. It remains unclear if such Amendments would be extended to include a ban on divorce, though most supporters seem prepared to let that “standard” remain unchallenged.
