Withdrawn / Giuliani on Education
Words: Giuliani supports voucher programs and charter schools and feels that failing schools should be privatized. He advocates opening schools on weekends for remedial programs. “You only get one chance to educate a child, and if you screw it up, then it’s very hard to correct it later. We should be ashamed of ourselves, that we do not have the political courage to take on the unions, the special interests, and everything else that are holding our children back.”
Actions: As mayor, Giuliani supported Project Read, which helped increase students’ citywide reading scores, and Project Arts, which increased the number of arts teachers in the city.
UPDATE: Mayor Giuliani’s earlier statements on this issue still reflect his views. No new controversies have arisen with regards to his position.
